Sonar
Piezo elements are used in military and commercial sonar systems for position finding activities. Location of surface and subsurface vessels, depth measurement, surveying, fish location, and communication are several of the more common sonar applications. Piezoelectric ceramic materials have high bandwidth and can quickly respond by applying high force at low power levels. These materials are generally unaffected by environmental factors such as humidity and temperature. CTS materials can be formed to customer specifications and are available in a wide range of geometries with dimensions up to 150 mm or thicknesses less than 100 microns. Time-Resolved Electrochemical Quartz Crystal Microbalance

The quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) is a variant of acoustic wave microsensors that are capable of ultrasensitive mass measurements. Under favorable conditions, a typical QCM can measure a mass change of 0.1-1 ng/cm2. QCM oscillates in a mechanically resonant shear mode under the influence of a high frequency AC electric field which is applied across the thickness of the crystal. Figure 1b below shows an edge view of a QCM crystal undergoing oscillatory shear distortion. The central portions of the top and bottom of the crystal are coated with a typically disk-shaped thin metal film (e.g., gold).
