Sample Pretreatment For Optical Emission Spectrometry

Samples are taken from molten metal, thin sheet, semi-complete or complete products. When sampling molten metal with a ladle, small quantities of molten metal are poured into a casting mold. Unnecessary parts of the sample are removed using a grinder or a cutter. As particles from a grinder may contaminate the surface of the sample, a lathe or milling machine is used (not a grinder) to cut soft samples such as white metal. If trace elements are not being investigated, a grinder or belt sander can be used. However, to minimize contamination, the grinding wheel or belt should be changed for each sample. Samples excised from semi-complete or complete products must be at least 12 mm in diameter. Small rod-shaped samples can be analyzed using special equipment.

The stand out feature of IsoVu™ is its best in class common mode rejection across the entire bandwidth. Accurate differential measurements rely on a measurement system’s bandwidth, rise time, common mode voltage, common mode rejection capability, and the ability to connect to smaller test points to characterize devices that are shrinking in size and increasing in performance. Despite these requirements, advancements in test and measurement for power testing, EMI testing, ESD testing, and remote measurement capability have been minimal at best and have not kept pace with changing requirements. While differential voltage probes have had modest performance gains in regard to bandwidth, these probes have failed to make any substantial improvements in regard to common mode rejection, and connectivity. IsoVu is a leap forward in technology and is the only solution with the required combination of high bandwidth, high common mode voltage, and high common mode rejection to enable these differential measurements.

These high stability variable frequency optical choppers each include a set of chemically blackened photoetched chopping discs. The mini chopper is an excellent choice for applications requiring a compact package. The chopping discs come in a variety of slot apertures and allow operation. Beam diameter is limited to 0.75mm when using the 200-slot disc and 1.0mm when using the 40 slot mini disc. The easy-to-interchange blades are made of non-magnetic, half hard brass and can be used in combination. Chopping frequency is set by adjusting a ten-turn dial or by applying an external DC voltage to the BNC input. Reference output is a TTL pulse and is in-phase with chopping action. The 5 digit led display gives a direct read-out of the chopping frequency. Power: 90-130V or 180-260V; 50/60Hz; 12VA max. Power supply included. Choppers are often used together with lock-in amplifiers.
