Core loss testing has become one of the most important tests for quality assurance in the motor industry. The function of a core loss test is to determine weather a motor has damaged core iron. Damage could include shorts between laminations and electrical arching. Although it is possible for a motor to still run with damaged core but the efficiency of that motor will be greatly reduced. The Motor will consume more power to operate at normal levels and it will cause the Motor to generate more heat. Heat will reduce the reliability of the motor and its overall life. Core Loss Testers

Stacks built with punched laminations can have a lot of quality issues. Even though the lamination material is tested in sheet format before any process, that alone is not sufficient to guarantee good quality stators. Wear and tear of the punch, bad welding, bad insulating coating in annealing add to the magnetic losses in the stator. Drum Core Inductors
Drum core inductors are so named as the conductor (round magnet wire) is wound directly onto the ferrite core which is shaped like a drum or spool. The wire is then connected to the core, a plastic base or metal lead frame to form the surface mount termination. Drum core inductors come in unshielded (high saturation current but potentially more EMI) and shielded constructions (lower saturation current but closed magnetic path for lower EMI). The shielded constructions use either a second ferrite core or a magnetic resin epoxy to create the magnetic shield.
