ProTone Wire Locator Kit features a powerful tone generator and a filtered, ultra-bright lighted probe. The CTX590 functions as a high quality wire locating tool that uses an inductive probe to sense a tone placed on the wires by its associated tone generator. The tone generator provides RJ11, RJ45 and insulated alligator clip connections. The Red/Green LED on the probe indicates continuity, voltage, and polarity. The probe also includes an ultra bright LED tip, fluorescent light noise filter and sensitivity control. The CTX590 can be used for tracking down short circuits, telephone central office connections, and other wire locating applications. Includes (2) 9V batteries and case.

Open Circuit Locator

The A994 is an open circuit locator for electric and telephone cables wind on the reel; it gives the position of the fault from the inside or outside end of the cable, in percentage to the total cable length. The instrument measures the ratio of the capacitances of the two sections of failed conductor using two high precision i/v converters. The advantage of this method is due to the fact that the measurement error depends almost exclusively on the dimensional inhomogeneity of the cable. The A994 has the unique feature to permit the location of fault in cables with all broken wires. This instrument locates breaks in cables with a total capacity between 2 nF and 5 uF. The distance to fault is displayed on a large LCD display.

Utility Locator
VM-810
Using the correct frequency makes a world of difference when locating buried utilities. The depth of the utility, size, material, and amount of congestion (proximity of other utilities) all need to be taken into consideration for the correct frequency selection. Large diameter, direct buried pipes with bell housing ends that use insulators and rubber gaskets, such as water or gas require a higher frequency while smaller diameter, well-grounded direct buried or long distance in conduits work, better with a lower frequency. The VM-810 operates at 83.1kHz which is ideal for water and gas utilities which generally are larger pipes with bell housings and gaskets. The VM-810’s higher frequency is also good for locating ungrounded small diameter drop wires and inducing signals through the soil, onto services when direct connecting is not an option.

Traveling-wave fault-locating technology calculates the locations of temporary and permanent faults by measuring the arrival times of the naturally occurring traveling waves caused by a transmission line fault. Accurately detecting these waves requires ultra-high-resolution monitoring, and locating is accurate to within one tower span (±300 m). Impedance-based fault-locating technology calculates fault locations by detecting changes in line impedance as a result of a fault. Impedance-based locating is reliable and accurate to about 2 percent of a line’s total length.
